Brother Kevin C. Cox began his tenure with the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 1980 when the citizens of District 97 in Oklahoma City elected him as their State Representative. After his initial election, Brother Cox served 12 consecutive two-year terms. Inside and outside of the capitol, Brother Cox proved himself as a leader for the Black Community, Oklahoma City, and the State of Oklahoma.

Brother Cox graduated from Bishop McGuinness High School in 1968 where he is a member of the McGuinness Athletic Hall of Fame and attended Florida A&M University on a football scholarship to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science in 1972, and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Georgia in 1974. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters Degree in 2005 and 2014 by Langston University and Shorter College, respectively.

Brother Cox is very active in a wide range of community activities including: a member of Fairview Baptist Church where he serves as an usher; a former member of the Urban League Board of Directors; a former member of the Board of Management of the Eastside YMCA, a life member of the NAACP, a member of the Oklahoma City Metro Officials' Association; was a certified referee for football, basketball, and softball; and was a certified lifeguard. He is also a 33rd degree Prince Hall Mason, and an active member of King David Lodge #50, and Alaraf Shrine Temple #20. He is a life member of the Langston University Alumni Association and the Florida A&M University Alumni Association. Brother Cox was inducted into the Oklahoma African American Hall of Fame in October of 2014.

During his service in the Oklahoma Legislature, Brother Cox held many leadership positions, including Assistant Majority Floor Leader, Chairman of the Oklahoma County House Democrats and tVice Chairman of the Oklahoma Legislative Black Caucus. In addition, he served on the House Committees on Education and Health throughout his 24 years in office, and was chairman of the House Committee on Insurance for 21 years. In 2001, Brother Cox was selected to serve on the Speaker's Leadership Team, becoming the first African-American House member in Oklahoma's history to be chosen for this leadership role.

Term limits approved by Oklahoma voters in 1990 are responsible for the end to Brother Cox's long career with the Oklahoma House of Representatives. Beginning in 1992, members were limited to 12 years of legislative service in addition to time already served. When he ended his career, Brother Cox ranked #2 in seniority among the 101 members of the House of Representatives. He retired as the longest-serving African-American legislator in Oklahoma's history.

Since his retirement, New Zion Baptist Church, Fairview Baptist Church, Greater Canon Baptist Church, Progressive Baptist Church and Mt. Calvary Baptist Church have honored him for his community service.

Brother Cox is a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi (#908), a Life Member of the Middle Western Province (#20), a Life Member of the Oklahoma City Alumni Chapter (#35), and Past Polemarch of the Oklahoma City Alumni Chapter where he holds the record for longest tenure of eight years through two non-consecutive terms.

Brother Cox resides in Oklahoma City with his wife, the former Carless Ann Washington, a retired high school assistant principal and their son, Kenneth.

Brother Cox stated that his work record during his service in the Legislature, combined with his record of community and civic service are a direct correlation toward his lifelong motto: "I'm a workhorse and not a showhorse!"
